A fast-moving wildfire in the Nanaimo region has triggered evacuation orders for nearly 400 properties and a provincial park near Cameron Lake, as firefighters battle challenging conditions and strong winds.

Evacuation Orders Issued

The BC Wildfire Service issued evacuation orders late Sunday evening for properties in the Cameron Lake area, including the popular provincial park that draws thousands of visitors annually. The fire, which started Saturday afternoon, has grown to approximately 150 hectares and continues to spread rapidly.

"Conditions are extremely challenging with strong winds and dry vegetation," said BC Wildfire Service spokesperson Mike McCulley. "We're asking residents to evacuate immediately and not return until it's safe to do so."

Firefighting Efforts Intensify

More than 100 firefighters, including crews from Nanaimo, Parksville, and Qualicum Beach, are working around the clock to contain the blaze. Air tankers and helicopters have been deployed to support ground crews, but visibility issues due to thick smoke have hampered aerial operations.

The fire is currently burning in difficult terrain with limited road access, making containment efforts particularly challenging. Fire officials estimate it could take several days to bring the fire under control.

Community Impact

Local businesses in the Cameron Lake area have been forced to close, including the popular Cameron Lake Café and several campgrounds. The evacuation has also affected the nearby community of Coombs, where residents are being asked to prepare for potential evacuation orders.

"We're monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as conditions change," said Nanaimo Regional District Emergency Operations Centre director Paul Thorkelsson.

Safety Advisories

Authorities are urging residents to:

  • Follow evacuation orders immediately
  • Register with Emergency Support Services if evacuated
  • Avoid the area to allow emergency vehicles clear access
  • Monitor official channels for updates

The evacuation centre has been established at the Parksville Community Centre, where displaced residents can access emergency support services and temporary accommodation.

Climate-Driven Emergency

This wildfire represents the latest in a series of climate-related emergencies affecting Vancouver Island. Experts note that the region is experiencing longer, more intense fire seasons due to changing weather patterns and drier conditions.

"These types of events are becoming more frequent and severe," said University of Victoria climate researcher Dr. Emily Rodriguez. "Communities need to be prepared for the reality of climate-driven emergencies."
