Oyster River Recycling Depot Acquired by Comox Strathcona Waste Management
The acquisition ensures continued recycling services and future upgrades for Comox Valley residents.
Courtenay, Comox, Cumberland, Campbell River — According to CHEK, the Oyster River Recycling Depot has been acquired by Comox Strathcona Waste Management (CSWM) to maintain its role as a crucial community resource. Located at 2185 Regent Rd., the depot will continue to serve residents from the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD), Strathcona Regional District (SRD), and South Campbell River. CSWM plans to implement upgrades and expand recycling options in the coming years.
The acquisition was financed through CSWM’s approved financial plan, with improvements including building upgrades, additional parking, and enhanced diversion services. CSWM aims to integrate the depot into Recycle BC’s network, which would enable residents to recycle a wider range of materials, such as glass, foam, and flexible plastic packaging.
The depot has been a part of the Oyster River community since 1976, originally built as a fire hall. It began offering recycling services in 2002 and currently serves approximately 12,000 residents, along with commuters travelling between Campbell River and Courtenay. The facility collects over 500 tonnes of recyclable materials annually, making it one of the busiest depots in the CSWM system.
John Rice, SRD Director of Electoral Area D (Oyster Bay – Buttle Lake), expressed optimism about the acquisition, stating, "Now that we have purchased this property and building, we can plan to make improvements to the resident experience and explore potential expansion opportunities." Edwin Grieve, CVRD Director for Electoral Area C (Puntledge–Black Creek), added that the purchase secures the facility’s future, emphasizing its long-standing importance to the community.
For more details on the planned improvements to the recycling depot, residents can visit CSWM’s website.
