NANAIMO — As the summer season draws to a close, families in the Nanaimo-Ladysmith area are preparing for the back-to-school rush. However, with the rising cost of living, many parents are finding it increasingly difficult to afford essential school supplies. To address this pressing issue, the Nanaimo-Ladysmith Schools Foundation (NLSF) has launched its annual Stock the Lockers campaign, which aims to provide critical support to local students in need.

Running from August 1 to September 15, the campaign invites monetary and school supply donations, which will directly benefit students in the community. NLSF Executive Director Crystal Dennison emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, "We provide everything from backpacks and crayons to running shoes and jackets. We also assist with athletic fees, graduation costs, and field trip expenses for families facing financial challenges." Last year, the program successfully supported approximately 950 students, in addition to aiding many others with various school-related fees.

In addition to school supplies, NLSF is also accepting donations of personal care items, such as shampoo, conditioner, and feminine hygiene products. Dennison noted that the need for assistance is widespread across the district, highlighting that "there's need everywhere." To further support the community, NLSF is working on establishing a year-round community closet that will provide access to these essential products and supplies.

For over 20 years, NLSF has been dedicated to helping students overcome financial barriers to education, ensuring they have the resources necessary to succeed. Dennison remarked, "The goal is to make sure all students have their basic needs met, which increases their chances of graduating and pursuing post-secondary education." To kick off the campaign, NLSF will host a free family fun event on Sunday, August 24, at Nanaimo North Town Centre from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., where donations will also be accepted.
